John Wojno Obituary

Our Polka King, John Wojno, 92, left this world on March 28, 2024, to join his wife of 69 years, Marie Wojno, who died July 9, 2023; and his only son, John Wojno, who passed away ten years ago.  John “Gooch” Wojno, Hastings, formerly of Emeigh, was born January 24, 1932, in Barnesboro, the son of Stanley and Victoria (Alexsandrowicz) Wojno and the last surviving member of his immediate family.  He was preceded in death by parents; grandson, Joshua Cunningham; brothers, Charles, Stanley, Joseph, and Blair Wojno; and sisters, Stella Favara, Sophie Kapeluch, Jennie Popovich, Helen Olsick, Edith Zahar, and twin sister, Frances Soltis.  Survived by daughters, Joan (John) Kordish, Emeigh and Darla Wojno (Mike Filkins), Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Jacqueline (Robert) Lihvarchik, State College; Heather (Duane) Frantz, Halifax; Heidi Wojno, Lancaster; Eric Cunningham, Northern Cambria, Leah Cunningham, Emeigh; Isaiah and Sirach Bice, both of Tucson; and great-grandchildren, Hunter Smith, Butte, MT and Mia Laverick, Northern Cambria.  The coal mines were John’s life for 35 years, but he always found time to travel the United States in a station wagon or motor home.  Sports also played a big part in his life.  He was either playing in the backyard with the kids or in a community league.  Being active kept him young, whether it was pitching softball, playing water volleyball, flag football, or ice hockey.  Throughout his life he worked and played hard.  His family will miss their polka cruises, their annual trips to Seven Springs Polka Fireworks, and Sunday Morning Polka Party.  John was able to remain at home under the loving care of his daughters.  The Wojno family wishes to express their gratitude to friend and caregiver, Janice Hollen, for her kindness and compassion.  A special thank you to Brandi Lydic, Nicole Kline, and the staff at Penn Home Health for their excellent care.  Honoring his wishes there will be no public visitation or services.  Interment, East Ridge Cemetery.  Moriconi Funeral Home, Inc., Northern Cambria in charge of arrangements.
